What is evidence?

1. A thing or things helpful in forming a conclusion or judgment
 
2. Something indicative; an outward sign
 
3. Law: The documentary or oral statements and the material objects admissible as testimony in a court of law

What the dictionary doesn't explain:
 
Evidence is Fleeting.
It is Open to Manipulation and Destruction.
 
The first thing the police do when an incident occurs is to freeze the scene and document whatever is found.
Statements are taken from witnesses.
The scene is photographed, videotaped and/or diagramed. 
Physical evidence is collected for analysis.  
 
Why?
 
          Witnesses move
          Memories fade
          Witnesses can be influenced
          Cheaters and frauds cover their tracks
          Alibis are manufactured
          Evidence is altered, concealed or destroyed
          A locations characteristics can change over time
         
 
The only thing the court has to go on to prove your story is what you present.
 
Best practice is to document evidence as soon as possible.
